“Hunter Valley Semillon is Australia’s unique gift to the wine world.”
Jancis Robinson MW.
The Hunter Valley is Australia’s first and oldest wine region. Vine cuttings were first planted in the Hunter Valley in the 1830s, and many of the pioneering wine families like Tyrrell’s and Drayton’s are still making wine today.
The Hunter produces a wide variety of wines, but it is most famous for its unique style of Semillon. When it’s young, Hunter Semillon has vibrant lemon/lime characters and steely, mouth-puckeringly dry acids. After a few years in the bottle however, it develops gloriously rich honeyed toasty characters. If you like aged Hunter Semillon, buy a case or two and stash them away for a while, and savour them with a good cheddar, or your favourite duck dish. If you like mouthwatering ripe citrus fruit and shimmering, crisp acids, don’t cellar them. Drink them young and fresh – ideally with some fresh seafood. Prawns, oysters, grilled fish, Balmain bugs, lobster….you name it, a crisp, young Hunter Semillon will match it beautifully.
